I shouldn't have to since my digital ID will not have changed. Since I'm a musician, I'm hoping that by doing this, I won't have to reauthorize all my plugins. I understand that I can drag and drop my home folder, but if I use a backup program, will I be able to back up and restore applications without having to reinstall them again? Heck, even my Dual QS 1gig runs smoother than this thing! So, I'm hoping that if I do a clean reinstall, that it will help. This PPC G5 of mine is a dog, and it seems everything really taxes the CPU, even after I added another gig of memory. I'm thinking my 10.4.11 software is messed up. The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media. Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two. However, it cannot create bootable backups. Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)Īpple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones: Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary) My personal recommendations are (order is not significant): You should get proper backup software and use it to perform backups. If you want to do a proper backup you should not use drag and drop. Again.Except for your account or Home folder you cannot simply drag and copy for backup as this will mess up the permissions. Sorry QNAP, QSYNC (For MAC) is a dud and not really fit for serious use. Its not downloaded two directories and god knows which files are missing from the the folders it has downloaded, and whats happening on the NAS when it does a sync up is anyomes guess. I'm struggling again with QSYC, the latest version. I have tried the first two both with success but as each new QSYNC comes out I keep going back to it. There are alternatives such as ChronoSync, GoodSync and FreeFileSync. QNAP really could do with sorting this QSYNC app out We want to have our own private cloud, example of good syncing is Dropbox and Google Drive which tells you what's going on and does it very quickly showing file name etc etc as they get transferred. The QSYNC app tells you nothing except "Scanning" which seems to be the most often notification, followed by 23/101 events 23% which means nothing. The Windows version is a little bit quicker and more reliable. I have found a lot of files randomly missing, directories not being pulled down from the NAS with clean installs, which I have done several times. I am using this in a business environment. If I did the same thing with Google drive, it finishes much faster and it's transferring over the internet. This Qsync software just doesn't seem to work that well. So unless your only changing a couple files at a time, it's faster to do this the old fashioned way and manually copy the files. Seems to spend a lot of time just "downloading file change list.". Manually copied the files up to the server, then copied to the Qsync folder using File Station (can't copy directly to Qsync directory because it can't be accessed as a share), and then copied from the server to my desktop, way faster. I just paused the sync on both my laptop and desktop. Ridiculously slow, couple of files here, couple of files there. Got to the office this morning, turned on the laptop and let it start syncing. Went on a business trip and made some changes on the airplane last night. I have been testing this out as well, and have had similar results.
